Sunday 13th saw the start of this year’s Berkhamsted Club Fours competition. This year a different approach to previous was used in order to determine the finalists to go forward to the Club’s Finals weekend on September 9th/10th.
The 24 entrants were drawn into 6 teams in the clubhouse before at the start of the day’s play at 10 a.m. These 6 teams were divided into 2 groups and each team then played three ‘9-end’ matches with points being awarded for winning both the match and the number of ends in each match.
At the end of the highly entertaining, good humoured but very competitive day the winners of each group were decided in one case by 1 point and the other by shot difference after being equal on points. The successful teams making the final were: Eric Lloyd, Janet Jackson, Alan Jones & Tom Presland and John Bell, Tony Smart, Anne Cutting & Ken Maynard.’
This week [w/e 20th August] our defending pairs Champions made it to the Final – David Brown & Kevin Clarke beat Martin Coles & Vinny Payne (Garston) 20-13 in the Watford & District pairs semi finals at Bushey Met Police Bowls Club last week. They will now be in the Finals on 2nd September at Watford Bowls Club in Cassiobury Park and play against a pair from Mill End Bowls Club. Once again Berkhamsted supporters were at Bushey in appalling conditions to cheer their players on, many thanks to them all.
In the Saturday friendly game against Harpenden, Berkhamsted had a good win by 112 shots to 79. The top rink was K Lingwood, Jackie Cormack and Derek Sandford who contributed a lot to the win with a score of 31-14.
Sunday saw the club Triples competition to determine the Finalists for the Finals weekend on 9th & 10th September. As for the previous week’s Fours competition a ‘Gala’ style competition was run. Once again in a highly enjoyable competition 12 teams battled in a series of 7-end matches to determine the semi-finalists who then rounded off the day to find the two finalists: Kay Lingwood, Maurice Primo and Brian Livesey edged out Tony Smart, Anne Furlong & Steve Burrell and Ray Kessler, Janice Murgatroyd and Derek Sandford narrowly defeated Lynn Kessler, Alan Jones and Dave Sear. The ‘new’ format for these two competitions seems to have been well received.
