About

BERKHAMSTED BOWLS CLUB AND GREEN

Since it was founded in 1985, Berkhamsted Bowls Club has operated as a mixed club - there is no discrete mens section or ladies section. A single Management committee ensures the smooth running of the Club and all Club  members are actively encouraged to participate in Club events. There is approximately an even ratio of men to ladies at the Club.

Many of our Club friendly fixtures are mixed, with only a handful of single sex games during the playing season, which runs from late April until the end of September each year.

The green was  maintained by Dacorum Borough Council but since January 2003 the Club has undertaken the management of the facility at Canal Fields. We have aquired the services of a specialist contractor, Turfcare Leisure Services Limited, to look after our green and a group of volunteer club members cut the green during the playing season. The members also manage the garden and surrounding areas.

Dress for roll-ups is casual, but not too casual as to offend. Participation in competitions and matches requires the wearing of the Club uniform. A shirt in Club colours and usually grey below the waist for midweek matches and white for weekends. Approved flat-soled,white, brown or grey shoes must be worn at all times on the green( no trainers ).

The Clubhouse has full disabled facilities and is maintained on a completely voluntary basis - Club members offer to participate in cleaning rotas, tea rotas, etc. In fact, it is a requirement of membership that all members do one Clubhouse cleaning duty during the year and either one tea duty or bar duty.

Although Berkhamsted Bowls Club has only been in existance since 1985, the Club has been fortunate enough to to have been successful in all levels of competition. We have had representatives at the mens national championships at Worthing and ladies national championships at Leamington Spa.

However, bowling does not have to be competetive all the time - every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, all bowlers who turn up at the Club can participate in a friendly "roll-up". One evening a week is given over to roll-ups, each evening session being followed by a barbecue. During the winter there is a full programme of social events.

If you would like more information about Berkhamsted Bowls Club phone 01442-877111 (during the season) or Mrs Beryl Parsons, our current membership secretary, on 01442-258765. who will gladly arrange for you to visit the Club and "have a go"
