40th Anniversary match against The Friends of English Bowling

The Friends of English Bowling (FoEB) kick off their season at Berkhamsted

On Tuesday 13th May 2025 The Friends of English Bowling (FoEB) came to play a commemorative match as part of our 40th Anniversary events.  FoEB are an organisation set up solely to support the game of lawn bowls and raise much needed funds to support Bowls England amongst other organisations. It was the first game of the FoEB bowling season, and the sun was out in full force for a 6 Rink match.   Friends had ravelled from 10 different counties to take part in this event as part of our 40th anniversary year.

We made them very welcome and they relaxed in the sunshine with a cool drink, and a roll before the game began.   Plenty of sun screen was needed as players readied for the game.

Berkhamsted’s Captain David Brown and Friends Captain of the Day, John Thompson (below) welcomed all to the green and announced the format of the match – 18 Ends, no trial ends but with scoring 1 shot on each of the first two ends.

We have been up & running for a few matches but it was Friends’ first game of the season, and they can surely be forgiven for yielding to us with a final score of  116-70! Despite the scoreline possibly indicating otherwise, most bowlers enjoyed the warm afternoon’s friendly competitive spirit.

Top rinks were: For Berkhamsted – Rink 5 (Jackie (Skip), Alison, Dave, and Paul) and Rink 4 for FoEB (Andy Hunt (skip), Val White, John Scholey, and Paul Robinson)

The clubhouse was impressively decorated with bunting, and the tables laid out beautifully.  The meal provided by our Catering ‘Supremos’ – led by Ann – was perfect, homemade beef or chicken pie, with lots of veg.  and to follow a selection of delights. Dave, helped out on occasion by other club members, ensured that players were adequately replenished from the Bar.  A very big thank you to all who donated prizes for a very successful Raffle – congratulations to all who were successful.

The afternoon concluded with the two Captains delivering their thanks to all of our worthy helpers, and Captain John Thompson presenting David Brown. on behalf of our club, with a Friends Certificate as a reminder of their visit.
