It was a pleasure to play at Harpenden. The weather was good as was the sportsmanship. Overall it was a close game Harpenden winning by 66 points to Berkhamsted’s 59. We did have a top rink which was number 5. Well done to Carole Dunn, Janet Sykes and skip Phil Clarke for achieving a score of 23 to 5!

Saturday was not the best day for bowling. Rain stopped play on several occasions but throughout good humour prevailed. No photos could be taken during the day. It was a close fought match with Berkhamsted winning by a small margin of 69 to 65. Each club had two wins on two of the four rinks. Well done to rink2 our top rink (L Baker, J Bell and D Drew) with a score of 28 to 9. Thank you to all the bowlers who took part.

Sat 17th June 4MXT v ASTON CLINTON B.C.

We entertained Aston Clinton in a very friendly and jovial 4 rink match.
During the first 9 ends it appeared that we were heading for a winning score one or two of our teams were well ahead whilst the others were in a tit for tat games.
However, Aston Clinton started to take control and finished the match strongly winning three out of the four rinks, Our winning rink was rink No 1 -Liz Baker,Janet Sykes and Tony Howard who won by two shots. The final score was Berko 56 and Aston Clinton 77.
After the match we all enjoyed a lovely ploughman’s tea provided by Phil and Annette Clarke which was complimented on by Aston Clinton. Also thanks to Colin Shortall and Geoff Drew for running the bar at very short notice.

Sun 11th June 3MXT v HEMEL HEMPSTEAD B.C.

Everyone arrived on a wonderfully sunny and boiling hot Sunday afternoon. It was agreed to play just 16 ends with a 5 minute break for drinks after 8 ends.
After almost 6 ends, in the heat, the rain just fell and everyone scapered under cover and to the bar after finishing their end. Never had a J2O tasted so good!
A welcome break for all and a chance to chat and rehydrate for 15 minutes.
The temperature then just dropped and we all finished the next 10 ends in more pleasant conditions and in good company.
Berkhamsted won 56 to 31 overall, winning 2 rinks and losing on 1 on rink 3 by just 1 point on the last bowl of the last end.

Wed 31st May 4MXT v CHESSVALE B.C.

We had a successful evening visit to Chessvale. That does not happen very often. The game finished quite late, in the near dark, as one rink was very slow.
We won 68-55, winning on 3 of the 4 rinks. Top rink was Keiran Davis (filling in for Jackie Cormack) Colin Shortall and Kay Lingwood, winning by the handsome margin of 22-10.

Other rink results:

Burrell/Mackness/Ralphs won 19-12
Smart/Gill Howells/Howard won 18-16
Becky Davis/Rod Hattan/Fisher lost 9-17

Sun 21st May 4MXT v BUSHEY B.C.

2 true and trusted club members did “battle” with our friends from Bushey B C in a closely fought but friendly match which slipped away from us over the last few ends. The final score was Berkhamsted 54 shots v Bushey 61 shots. The top scoring rink for Berkhamsted was Annette Clarke, Stuart Wesley and Alan Baker.

Sun 20th May 4MXT v HARPENDEN B.C.

“Spring/early summer weather finally arrived for this year’s bowls season for a home friendly fixture against our near neighbours from Harpenden. Short sleeves, hats and sunglasses were the order of the day.
Four mixed triples played against each other, with Jenny Carr making her Berkhamsted debut and she certainly did not look out of place and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience. Another notable performance from one of Berkhamsted’s newer Members, but not new to bowling, was via Rod Hattan. A performance certainly worthy of the Berkhamsted selection committee to take note, encourage Rod to put his name down for more competitive matches and consider him for selection.

As to the match ; Berkhamsted won comfortably (approximately 77 – 44), winning on 3 Rinks and only the home Captain’s Rink losing by about 4-5 shots. ! The triple of Janet Sykes, Rod Hattan and Dave Drew put in a superb performance on our ‘show’ Rink 1, in front of an appreciative and very welcome band of home supporters, inning 30 – 4 ! As Berkhamsted BC like to encourage good bowling, their reward was to be presented after the match with a Berkhamsted BC notebook and pen by their Acting Captain.

A big thank you must go to Pete Batchelor who served drinks behind the bar ; Janet Hart for the teas and cakes, especially the homemade gluten free offering, plus assisted by Marcia Dunstone. Lastly, a thank you to Ken Moxley for not only turning up as our one and only Reserve, but who remained all afternoon on the request of the Captain, as the fitness of one of our players to last the full 18 Ends was in question.”

Sun 14th May 4MXT v CROXLEY GUILD B.C.

Sadly we lost the match by 22 shots : 55 : 77
Rink 2 Jackie Healy, Gill Howells & I lost 11 : 16 vs men’s captain Daniel Conibeer
Rink 3 Paul Healy, Janet Sykes & Jackie Cormack lost 11 : 26
Rink 4 Janet Spooner, Bill Howells & Gary Fisher drew 16 all and received the “top rink” prizes during the speeches.
Rink 5 Carole Dunn, Dagmar McKay, & Colin Shortall lost 17 : 19

Pleasant, friendly game in the sunshine. Unfortunately mesh mats were down so no variation of mat position available. (Carole mentioned it once or twice!!)
Jackie Cormack wasn’t well halfway through so Julie, one of their very good players who was watching, came on and Gill Howell took over as skip.
Club Chair, Sue Judge was there but not playing.
Usual speeches and pleasantries over huge trays of sandwiches and then we came home.

Wed 10th May 4MXT v TOWNSEND B.C.

The match started but with some doubt. About one hour before Berkhamsted were due to play Townsend the heavens opened. Rinks 1 & 2 were partially flooded and we had to put protective mats down. Needless to say play was heavy to begin with. Some rinks had close matches and Berkhamsted did have a top rink which was Rink 4.
However all credit to Townsend who won 85 to 56.
