Last week Janice Murgatroyd & Liz Temple won their Watford & District 4th round match  31-10 against a duo from Bushey Met Police.

In a friendly at Cheddington Berkhamsted  had a warm welcome and a good game of Bowls coming out winners by three Rinks to one.  The teams were John Webb, Toby Bunting, Anne Cutting and Bill Howells who won 18 – 11; Marion Maynard, Carol Syms, Jack Bunting, and Jackie Cormack who won 20 -19; Jackie Healey, Ray Kessler, Phil Bunting, Peter Batchelor  who lost 9 -24 and the top rink of Frank Cutting, Sylvia Smith, David Sear and Ken Maynard who won 22 – 6.

On Friday evening Berkhamsted Men played Potters Bar in the Jones Cup. Berkhamsted won both the Home and the away leg by 41 shots to 30 and progress to the next round.

On Saturday Berkhamsted played against Little Gaddesden Bowls Club. It was a great day of sport with all players enjoying the match. The windy conditions tested both sides but Berkhamsted emerged as the winner on all rinks. Special congratulations must go to Myra Lenz , Brian Smith and Steve Burrell who were the top rink. The final score was Berkhamsted 85 and Little Gaddesden 46. 

The next day Berkhamsted played a four rink friendly against Wing. It was an enjoyable afternoon with Berkhamsted winning with 69 shots to 62. Top rink was Geoff Drew, Dagmar McKay and Maurice Primo.

Not to be outdone 3 ladies from Berkhamsted, namely Carole Dunn, Anne Furlong and Jackie Cormack had an emphatic win against a trio from Tring by 25 shots to 6, they now go through to the Watford and District triples semi-finals.

Finally as reported in an earlier edition, this week, the two Bunting boys played their  County Final U25 pairs match at Welwyn BC . The result was Tom Muir and Jack Bunting beat Sam Andrews & Toby Bunting to make it through to Leamington.

Press Report W/E 6th July

 Saturday saw a busy day at Berkhamsted Bowls Club starting with Two mixed fours playing the 4th round of the Tony Allcock Trophy against Herts Club’ however the home team lost out by winning on one rink but losing on the other with a minus shot difference.

In the afternoon the club had their annual Captains versus Vice Captains competition with club Captains Brian Ralphs and Anne Furlong overcoming their Vice Captains by 117 shots to 78. Their top winning rink was Sylvia Smith, John Bell and David Brown. The top rink for the Vice Captains was Liz Baker, Sheila Bell and Bill Howells. During the afternoon £51 was raised with a Spider to start the match, for Diabetes UK and a raffle Raised £208 for the Hospice of St Francis.

On Sunday Berkhamsted welcomed Amersham. The results make good reading if you are an Amersham fan as they won 66 – 59 . Berkhamsted did have a winning rink of Mick Young, Carol Syms and Alan Jones 18 – 15. Jenny Carr, Maurice Primo and Peter Burke drew 17 – 17. Janice Cheshire Burke, Phil Clarke and Gary Fisher lost 12 – 24 and Geoff Drew, Annette Clark and Tony Smart  lost 12 – 28.

However Berkhamsted’s fortunes certainly took a turn for the better when a team from Berkhamsted Bowls Club took part in the Countywide Gerald Scott Memorial Gala at Hatfield Bowls Club.  Playing in 4 games during the day the team of Bob Anderson, Liz Temple, David Brown and Marcia Dunstone won 3 out of those 4 games with the only loss being by 1 shot. Hopes were high when the runners up were announced & had 6 points (3 game win) with a shot differential of 17.  The Berkhamsted team won with 6 points also but with a shot differential of 32 shots.  The trophy will be presented at the Annual County Presentation Dinner in November.

Not a very good week for Berkhamsted when Pete Batchelor & Paul Sims played their 2nd Round of the Watford & District Men’s Pairs against  Keith Gissing & Alan Jones at Potten End on Monday evening . It was all very close until the 13th end after which the wheels came off the Berkhamsted challenge and the Potten End pair ran out winners by 22 – 11. This continued in the Dacorum Charity Shield at Bovingdon with Berkhamsted being  outplayed on their artificial surface. The teams were …Men: (Jack Bunting/Tony Smart/Phil Bunting and David Brown) losing 18-25. Ladies: (Sarah Marshall Linda Ralphs Kay Lingwood and Jackie Cormack) drawing 17-17. Mixed: (Sylvia Smith. Alice Biggs Brian Ralphs and Kevin Clarke) losing 15-30. The Friendly team of Frank Cutting. Jill Griffin. Maurice Primo and Ken Maynard)lost 16-24. Overall Points were : Bovingdon 4.5 points Berkhamsted 0.5 points.

However Berkhamsted ladies were very successful with their two teams getting through to the County Senior Fours quarter finals. Janice Murgatroyd, Kay Lingwood, Liz Temple and Alice Biggs had an emphatic win against a team from Harpenden winning 19 – 9 whereas the team of Carol Dunn, Anne Furlong, Marcia Dunstone and Jackie Cormack won by 1 shot on the last end due to a stunning skips wood. They now both play at Hatfield next week Unfortunately the Ladies came to the end of their run in the National Top Club when they were defeated by Northaw & Cuffley on the hottest day of the year losing on shots after a 2 – 2 draw. The Berkhamsted team was Alice Biggs, Janice Murgatroyd, Liz Temple, Anne Furlong, Anne Cutting, Jackie Cormack, Carole Dunn, Linda Ralphs, Kay Lingwood and Marcia Dunstone. 

Although Berkhamsted had a very good reception and welcome by their hosts , Hazells, who were a pleasure  to play, Berkhamsted were thrashed by 118 shots to 50.  All our rinks lost some by very large margins. The winning rink for the Berkhamsted team was awarded to the team with the least deficit that was  Bob Anderson, Mick Young and Marion Maynard who lost by 5 shots.

Nevertheless the week did finish on a high when the Men played the Griffin Cup 3rd round against Bovingdon and won convincingly. the teams were: Steve Burrell, Brian Ralphs, David Brown and Kevin Clarke and Jack Bunting, Phil Bunting, Trefor Jenkins and Tony Howard. Berkhamsted are now through to the Semi-final to be played on 3rd Aug.

On Thursday, Berkhamsted Men played Kitcheners in the Ray Cup Second Round at home and won overall by 3 shots, but they did not fare so well on Friday when they were well beaten in the Herts Team Ten Competition by Garston at Garston although there were some very close scores.

However the week finished on a high when they travelled to Welwyn Garden City to play Round 4 of the National Top Club.  It was arguably one of their best wins ever against a strong club, winning 4 Games to 1. The results were, Two Wood:  Tony Howard won 14-11; Singles:  Trefor Jenkins won 21-18; Pairs:  Steve Burrell and Kevin Clarke won 24-17, after trailing for most of the way, until the 16th end; Triples:  Brian Livesey, Brian Ralphs and David Brown won 18-14; Fours:  Dave Sear, Tony Smart, Bill Howells and Peter Rowling lost 14-20.

Berkhamsted enjoyed a good victory on Sunday when they defeated Kings Langley in the 3rd Round of the Tony Allcock Trophy. Carole Dunn, Anne Furlong, Trefor Jenkins and Tony Howard won by 20 – 13 and Janice Murgatroyd, Jackie Cormack, Kevin Clarke and David Brown won by 19 – 12 so they now progress to the 4th round.

To finish the week Berkhamsted played a friendly of 5 mixed triples against a team from Hemel Hempstead and won by 85 to 69.The top rink of Elizabeth Baker, John Webb and Alan Jones won by 20-12. Other rinks were Eric Lloyd, Gill Howells and Ken Maynard 18-12, Marion Maynard, Stuart Wesley and Bill Howells 16-14, Janet Spooner, Alan Baker and Gary Fisher 21-15, and Maurice Primo, Tom Presland and Tony Smart 10-16.

The ladies had a great win this weekend in the National Top Club competition against Potters Bar. The competition is for 4 rinks, singles, pairs, triples and Fours which resulted in 2 games won and 2 games lost but Berkhamsted emerged winners by 71 shots to 68. Although 2 rinks lost they kept their game tight to ensure there wasn’t a large differential. The Berkhamsted team was Lesley Brown, Sarah Marshall, Janice Murgatroyd, Anne Furlong, Carole Dunn, Anne Cutting, Jackie Cormack, Alice Biggs, Linda Ralphs, Kay Lingwood and Marcia Dunstone.

Berkhamsted Men beat Met Police in Round 2 of the Griffin Cup 39-26 and will play Bovingdon at home in the next round on 27th June. Dave Gomm, Brian Ralphs, Trevor Jenkins and Tony Howard won 15-14 and Jack Bunting, Steve Burrell, Phil Bunting and Kevin Clarke won 24-12, after being 11-12 down after 12 ends.

In the County Pairs, Kevin Clarke and David Brown beat Dave and Bernie Craft of Mill End 25-10 and Dave Gomm and Tony Howard beat Roy Surrey and Brian Smith of Hemel Hempstead 21-18, after being down 1-14 early on.

Ladies West Division 2nd Round Match played at Herts BC, Linda Ralphs & Sarah Marshall beat Lois Hall and Tessa Miles, 22-20.

Ladies W & D Singles, Round 2:  Linda Ralphs lost 15-21 to Michele Cavaye of Kings Langley BC.

Finally Berkhamsted enjoyed the fine weather on Sunday to secure a friendly win over Harperbury, with only 9 shots separating the two sides;  Berkhamsted’s Eric Lloyd, Sylvia Smith and Steve Burrell led them to a 88 – 79 victory.
