Berkhamsted open day is a big success

As another season gets underway Berkhamsted Bowls Club now offer the opportunity of free bowls throughout May for the general public following another successful Open day. Free sessions are offered every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and Friday evenings, all details are on Berkhamsted’s web site.

In recent years Berkhamsted have enjoyed some of the best membership take ups in the Country helping them land their celebrated title of National Club of the Year for 2015. Last week also saw them provide taster sessions to 30 scouts as they look to build on their healthy Junior section. The Club now has 17 youngsters ranging in age from 10 to 18 but is still looking to recruit more girls.

Club President Kevin Clarke encouraged all girls and ladies to take up the challenge. He said “Whilst we have a very healthy Club we are still looking for more women of all ages to come and have a go. “There are fantastic opportunities in the ladies game particularly if you have the natural talent and determination to succeed”.

Meanwhile the playing season opened on Saturday with a game versus Berkhamsted’s old rivals, Potton End. Berkhamsted were beaten by 122 shots to 101 despite the best efforts of a top team of Gillian Howells, Jean Greenfield, Alan Jones and Terry Kenyon.

Things did not get much better on Sunday in an away game against Cheddington which was lost by 76 shots to 83. A top rink of Margaret Goodwin, Elizabeth Baker, David Biggerstaff and Paul Mackness managed to pull off a win by 22 shots to 21.
