A very enjoyable 6 Mixed Triples Rinks match against a Disability Bowls England (DBE) Team took place at the club on Wednesday 24th August 2016.  Members of the DBE team came from many different parts of the country – Torquay, Brighton, Canvey Island, Warwick, St Albans and Milton Keynes to name a few; this showed their enthusiasm and literally the lengths they would go to for a game of Bowls.

We were treated to a very warm afternoon, may be a shade to warm for some, but this made for a convivial and competitive, but friendly, atmosphere. The match result didn’t matter, the real result was seeing and appreciating the levels of skill shown by our visitors, particularly those with significant disabilities. To combat the warm temperature the match had a ‘half-time’ allowing all to re-hydrate to ensure there were no medical casualties!

After the match our guests were treated to ‘Berkhamsted hospitality’  – drinks and meal cooked by some of our  Lady members led by Jackie Cormack. All agreed that it had been an excellent day and one which we hope might become a regular fixture in both of our calendars. DBE did ask that if we know of Bowlers with disabilities who would like to join them, then could we make them aware of their web-site and encourage them to become involved in promoting and playing ‘disability’ bowls. We support this initiative and encourage all to spread the word.

Our Ladies started the week well by winning their last Watford and District league game , beating a team from Abbots Langley by 26 shots to 12. The winning team was Alice Biggs, Janet Jackson, Anne Furlong and Jackie Cormack.

Further success continued in the friendly match against Garston with Berkhamsted winning 63 – 57. This was helped with a top rink of Steven Shearing, Noreen Codina, Dick Gardener and Jackie Cormack. However, this did not continue with a loss against Harpenden by 80 – 93 despite the efforts of the top rink of Tony Smart, Bill Howells and Mary Clarke.

“In the U18 National Championships at Leamington, Berkhamsted were represented by Christopher Webb, Luke Swan & Jamie Robertson. Whilst Luke and Jamie fell at the first hurdle Chris went on to reach the last 32 being defeated by a very impressive Northants player. However, Luke and his partner Aaron Prowle reached the quarter finals of the Plate pairs competition rounding off a an excellent weekend for the Hertfordshire representation.

The week started with David Brown, Steve Burrell and Kevin Clarke beating a team from Bushey by 29 – 5 shots to get into the semi-finals of the Watford and District Triples competition. This means that David & Kevin will be in the Pairs and Triples semi-finals on the 9th and 10th August.

On Saturday Berkhamsted played hosts to a Men’s County match as Hertfordshire took on Wiltshire in a thrilling match which ended up as a 117-117 draw.

Hertfordshire looked like they had won it as Berkhamsted’s own David Brown drew for shot only to be foiled by a brilliant last shot of the match as Wiltshire’s nerve held out. Once again Berkhamsted rose to the occasion in hosting another memorable event and President Kevin Clarke praised his members for once again showing why they are now considered one of the leading Clubs in the Country.

On Sunday the clubs Fours started with some fierce competition amongst the participants.”

The Club is very pleased to be hosting a Mens County match this coming Saturday (August 6th) when Hertfordshire take on Wiltshire at 2.00 p.m.  We are hoping for warm, dry weather and a good attendance to see some quality bowling.

We want to put our best face on and the ‘Green’ and ‘Catering’ teams, led by David Brown and Carole Dunn, respectively have been hard at it to ensure that our visitors enjoy the facilities and welcome of our club.  We’ve even snapped David Brown on his knees, but the big question is why?

Brown Knees

Was he waging war on those pesky worms that always seem to pop up and deflect his otherwise perfect deliveries?

Was he looking for that five-p coin he dropped last winter?, or

Was he praying to Mecca for some divine help?

Apparently none of these – he has gone to great lengths to claim that he was attending to minor repairs on the green for this match – but what do you think?

Come along and ask him yourself!
