PRESIDENT’S DAY starts promptly at 2 pm this Sunday and the theme for the day is the Olympics/Paralympics with dress code being the colours of the Olympic logo as shown below.  Prior to that at 1.30 all who played in any of this year’s Dacorum Charity Shield matches are asked to come to the club for a celebratory photo in club shirts/whites with the Shield, which is now in our possession!!

The weather looks mainly good for the last day of the playing season and  ALL Players on the list play plus the first two reserves (Joan Luther & Corrine Little).
It will be run as a gala style event with twelve teams of triples all playing three matches of 50 minutes. All the teams will be named after Olympic events so if you fancy coming as a gymnast, rower, cyclist, sailor etc that would also be very welcome (and very funny). We also have a few questions based on this years events in Rio so swat up and blind us with your knowledge.

Food is £6 per head and there will be passes for the main car park (don’t forget there is an Open Day at the Tennis Club)

Berkhamsted pulled off a magnificent win in their last Dacorum Shield Game to beat Kings Langley on all rinks. They needed this to overtake Kitcheners who were ahead by 4 ½ points and Berkhamsted gained 5 points in a tense and exciting game. Berkhamsted also won on the two friendly rinks, the highest being Marion Maynard, Dick Gardner, Maurice Primo and Bill Howells.

In the Dacorum Shield all rinks were tight, the men winning with the the last running wood by skip Ken Maynard giving them a 18 – 17 win for the skip, Wally Dunn, Brian Ralphs and Mac Mackness. The mixed rink of Dave Sear, Janice Murgatroyd , Mary Clarke and Terry Kenyon won 19 – 14. The ladies team of Carole Dunn, Liz Temple, Anne Furlong and Jackie Cormack fought back from being 6 – 14 down to win 31 – 25. This win was the last competitive game of the season and brought great delight to the club, their last win in this competition being 7 years ago.
However Kitcheners got their own back for being pipped to the post in the Dacorum Shield by beating Berkhamsted later in the week by 111 shots to 46. Berkhamsted lost on all rinks and did not have a highest rink but only a rink that lost the least of Carole Dunn, Jill Griffin, Dave Drew and Peter Batchelor.
One omission from last week was that on Finals day Carole Dunn won the Seniors Trophy.

Thursday 15th September turned out to be a great day for our bowlers:

In the final Dacorum Shield Match of the season we were away at Kings Langley. Lying second in the league to Kitcheners before the match we needed to 4.5 points in order to win the Shield on shots difference.  However, the team took all 5 points to make absolutely certain that they finished at the top of the league.

It all hinged on the last wood in the Mens match. Ken Maynard had the last wood and, as he was about to deliver that wood, the Men were trailing by 1 shot meaning that he needed to overturn that shot for the draw needed to get the overall 4.5 points required to win the Shield.

The ‘wily old fox’ did better than that. He not only took out the holding Kings Langley wood, but touched the jack, carried it into the ditch – turning one down into 2 up for us; not only winning the rink but as our Ladies and Mixed rinks were ‘winning rinks’, we took all 5 match points.

Meanwhile in the 2016 Visually Impaired National Bowling Championships at Leamington Spa, Sarah Marshall won the National B1 Singles Trophy with an emphatic 21 – 4 scoreline. Earlier Sarah, with partner Nancy Cheeseman (Yeovil), won the National B2 Pairs Trophy.

Congratulations to our 2016 Dacorum Shield Mens Rink, Ladies Rink & Mixed Rink squads and to Sarah for more National titles.

Despite Berkhamsted losing two of their three friendly matches this week there was great success for Kevin Clarke and David Brown when they  bounced back from disappointment in the Watford & District Triples final to win the Pairs Championship in the afternoon. They defeated the father and son pair of David and Dylan Martin from Garston 23-6 in an entertaining and good humoured match. Earlier that week David Martin had reached the National Singles semi-finals at Leamington and won the District Singles before playing the pairs final.

In the first of the Friendly matches against Chalfont St. Giles Berkhamsted lost by 82 shots to 86; a top rink was achieved by Luke Swan, Anne Cutting and Alan Jones. A recovery was made when Berkhamsted beat Aylesbury Town by 65 shots 59 with a top rink of Ray Kessler, Del Root and Jackie Cormack. However the euphoria was short lived, in the other match against St. Albans, which was stopped at 16 ends through heavy rain, resulted in a loss  by 60 shots to 67 despite the effort of the top rink of Luke Swan, John Bell, Anne Cutting and Tom Presland.
